CJ is survived by his wife of sixty years Jay Nell, three sons, Alex (Shirl), Richard, and John David; four grandchildren Kari (Brian), Daniel (Tori), Brittany (Chris) and Chandler; two great-grandchildren Luke and Ava; his sister Hazel Collins of Macon, Georgia; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.  He was loved by all who knew him.

ARCHDALE-Clarence Jackson “CJ” Smith (90), passed away peacefully on August 29th, 2021 with his family by his side.  Born March 3, 1931 in Macon, Georgia, he was the youngest of nine children and affectionately called “Buddy.”  After his parents passed, he was taken in by his eldest sister Maureen and her husband Ellis Kitchens who raised him as their own.  Ellis would tell everyone with great affection, “Have you met my boy, Buddy?” and Maureen would tend to him as his mother. 

After graduating from Lanier High School for Boys in Macon, GA and having been inspired by WWII veterans, CJ turned down a full baseball scholarship to Mercer University to join the United States Marine Corps.  He proudly served 20 years earning the rank E7 Gunnery Sergeant and served in both Korea and Vietnam, earning many medals including two Purple Hearts.  He would proudly wear Veteran hats and loved to speak with other veterans when going out.
